Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has promised that the “punishment will continue” against “the Zionist enemy”, in his first statement on social media after the US joined the Israeli attacks on Iran.

“The Zionist enemy has made a big mistake, committed a big crime; it must be punished and it is being punished; it is being punished right now,” Khamenei said in a statement posted on X.

The post was accompanied by an image of a burning skull that bears the Star of David against the backdrop of burning buildings.

This comes after United States President Donald Trump has announced the bombing of three Iranian nuclear sites, as Washington joined Israel’s war against Iran.

“We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. All planes are now outside of Iran air space,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, using a different spelling for Isfahan.

In a televised address early on Sunday, he said “the strikes were a spectacular military success.”

Meanwhile Trump has hinted at possible regime change in Tehran, saying, “If the current Iranian regime is unable to make Iran great again, why wouldn’t there be a regime change?”

More than 400 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Iran, while retaliatory strikes by Tehran have killed at least 24 people in Israel.
