31 dead, 151 injured in monsoon-related disasters across Nepal

At least 31 people have lost their lives and 151 others have been injured in monsoon-related calamities that struck Nepal over the past month, beginning on May 28, authorities confirmed on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the country witnessed 682 separate weather-induced incidents between May 28 and June 30. These included floods, landslides, lightning strikes, and windstorms, all associated with the ongoing monsoon season.

“At least 31 people died, 151 were injured, and one went missing in these natural disasters,” said NDRRMA spokesperson Suresh Sunar.

To address the growing crisis and improve emergency response efforts, the NDRRMA on Tuesday formalised an agreement with the Association for Civil Aviation Operations. This collaboration will enable the deployment of private helicopters for rescue missions and relief operations throughout the monsoon period.

Sunar stated, “In response to the escalating situation, the NDRRMA and the Association for Civil Aviation Operations signed an agreement on Tuesday to mobilise private helicopters for rescue and relief activities as needed during the monsoon season.”

Lightning emerged as the deadliest hazard, resulting in eight fatalities. Both floods and high-altitude sickness claimed four lives each. Three deaths were linked to fire outbreaks, while another eight were attributed to animal attacks. Snake bites were responsible for two fatalities, and one person each died as a result of windstorms and heavy rain.

In addition to the human toll, the disasters also had a significant impact on livestock and infrastructure. A total of 222 animals perished, and property losses have been estimated at NPR 333.43 million. Furthermore, 97 homes sustained damage, while landslides and floods triggered by intense rainfall affected 1,026 families across various parts of the country, Sunar said.
