UP: Groom among 8 killed after SUV rams college wall

Eight members of a family, including a groom, were killed after a speeding SUV crashed into the boundary wall of a college in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district early Friday.

The accident occurred around 6:30 am in Jewanai village under the Gunnaur police limits, police said.

The Bolero SUV, carrying ten family members heading to attend a wedding, lost control and rammed into the wall of Janata Inter College before overturning.

Five people died on the spot, while three others succumbed to injuries later at a nearby hospital.

Two passengers remain in critical condition and have been referred to Aligarh for treatment.

The deceased include the groom, Suraj (24), his sister-in-law Asha (26), her two-year-old daughter Aishwarya, Vishnu (6), and the groom’s aunt. Two other minors, yet to be identified, were also killed in the crash.

Police officials said the vehicle was speeding at the time of the accident. “The impact was so severe that the SUV overturned after hitting the wall. Local residents and police teams rushed to the spot to pull out the victims,” Additional SP Anukriti Sharma told reporters.

Visuals from the scene showed the mangled remains of the vehicle and debris scattered across the road. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
