Jahangirpuri demolition drive continues despite SC order

The demolition drive in New Delhi's violence-hit areas of Jahangirpuri on Wednesday continues despite the Supreme Court ordering the status quo.

North Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh said the action will continue till the apex court's order is received, reports Indian Express.

Supreme Court advocate MR Shamshad wrote to Mayor, NDMC to "quash the notice issued".

Senior advocates Dushyant Dave, Kapil Sibal, PV Surendranath and Prashant Bhushan mentioned the matter before Chief Justice NV Ramana securing a status quo order.

Dave also said that the Jahangirpuri demolition was supposed to begin at 2 pm but since the matter was scheduled to be mentioned before the Supreme Court, the drive started at 9 am.

The demolition drive comes days after communal clashes broke out in the area. A total of 12 companies of the CRPF have been deployed across the city.

Meanwhile, #StopBulldozingMuslimHouses trends on Twitter as many critics of the BJP call the demolition drive, "illegal" and "unconstitutional".
