Tamil Nadu passes bill empowering govt to appoint VCs

The Tamil Nadu assembly on Monday unanimously passed a resolution that empowered the state government to appoint vice-chancellors to various universities in the state.

This move which will allow the state government to appoint VCs to state universities, aimed at curbing the governor's say in the matter.

The government said the bill was tabled based on recommendations by the University Search committee.

The main opposition AIADMK staged a walkout ahead of the passage of the bill, taking exception to a remark on late chief minister J Jayalalithaa by Congress Legislature Party leader K Selvaperunthagai while Opposition PMK supported the bill.

Legislators of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) walked out of the House after higher education minister K Ponmudy tabled the bill to amend the Tamil Nadu Universities Laws, ANI reported.
