Indian fan unfurls “rebuild Babri Masjid” banner at World Cup

A football fan from India hold up a banner reading “rebuild Babri Masjid” during the pre-quarter match at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar’s Lusail Stadium on Tuesday.

Tuesday marked the 30th anniversary of demolition of Babri Masjid in Uttar Pradesh, one of the prominent and iconic mosques in India. 30 years ago, on 6 December 1992, the screaming mob of thousands of Hindu militants backed by now-ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party stormed Babri Masjid and demolished it with sledgehammers and their bare hands. The demolition sparked nationwide anti-Muslim violence that left some 2,000 Muslims dead.

The banner which was carried by a Kerala youth Saifudheen Zaif read ”#Rebuild Babri Masjid” and “30 years of injustice” and it was held aloft during the match between Portugal and Switzerland at Lusail Stadium.

Many including prominent Muslim politicians in India took to social media to commemorate 30th anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition on Tuesday.
