China’s parliament backs Xi Jinping for third term as president
Xi Jinping on Friday secured a precedent-breaking third five-year presidential term, a move largely predicted.
The nearly 3,000 members of the National People’s Congress (NPC) voted unanimously for Xi after the constitution was changed to remove the traditional two-term limit for the post.
No one voted against him. Xi, was also unanimously named commander of the two million-member People’s Liberation Army.
Members of the NPC are appointed by the ruling Communist party.
Other Xi-approved officials will also be elected or appointed to key government posts during the upcoming weekend, including vice premiers, a central bank governor and numerous other ministers and department heads.
