50,000 Dalits to quit Hinduism, to embrace Buddhism in Gujarat

Over 50,000 people from Dalit Hindu communities are expected to embrace Buddhism at an event to be held in the Gujarat capital on Ambedkar Jayanti, 14 April.

The Swayam Sainik Dal (SSD), a Rajkot-based Dalit organisation claimed that 1,00,000 people will attend the programme, including a rally on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Bhimrao Ambedkar, Economic Times reported.

50,000 people confirmed that they would be renouncing Hinduism and embracing Buddhism on that day, organisers said.

“We shall continue organising these events on Baba Saheb's birth and death anniversary as well as other days of significance in the Dalit calendar," Solanki said.
