Manipur violence: Army says 23,000 civilians rescued

Indian Army and Assam rifles have rescued about 23,000 civilians so far in violence-hit Manipur and moved them to operating bases, Indian Army said in a statement on Sunday. 120-125 columns of the Army and Assam Rifles are deployed in Manipur since the violence began on May 3.

At least 52 people have been killed in Manipur since ethnic violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki communities, Indian Express reports, calculating figures from hospitals

Meanwhile, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said the Centre was taking all necessary steps to restore normalcy at the earliest.

Appealing to the people of Manipur to maintain peace, he called for dialogue between the communities to resolve the issue.
