G20 Summit: Modi’s country card reads ‘Bharat’
Sparking fresh controversy, the nameplate in front of Narendra Modi at the G20 Summit read Bharat and not India on Saturday. This will stir up the reports that Modi will be renaming India to Bharat in the special parliament session later this month.
The controversy broke out after a dinner invitation from the president’s office sent to G20 summit delegates described Droupadi Murmu as the “President of Bharat” instead of the usual “President of India”.
"India's G20 presidency has become a symbol of inclusion, of 'sabka saath' both inside and outside the country. This has become people's G20 in India. Crores of Indians are connected to this. In more than 60 cities of the country, more than 200 meetings have taken place. With the sense of 'Sabka Saath', India had proposed that the African Union be granted permanent membership of G20. I believe that all of us agree to this proposal," Modi said at the inaugural session of the Summit.
Modi earlier welcomed world leaders and foreign delegates as they arrived at New Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam for the Summit.
