Chhattisgarh: Accidental explosion kills CRPF constable on poll duty

An Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL) shell accidently exploded in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, killing a 32-year-old constable of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) assigned to poll duty, according to police.

According to an official, the incident happened close to Galgam village, which is within the jurisdiction of Usoor police station, while a group of security officers was conducting an area domination operation around half a kilometer away from a polling booth.

The district of Bijapur is part of the Bastar Lok Sabha constituency, where the first round of voting for the Lok Sabha is now taking place.

Constable Devendra Kumar of the CRPF's 196th battalion was flown in an air ambulance to Jagdalpur, the Bastar district capital, and admitted to the Medical College Hospital, where he died during the treatment.

A team of experts was sent to Galgam for investigation into the explosion, The Hindu reported.

Constable Kumar's funeral rites will be conducted in his native Dhobiguda village in Bastar district on Saturday.
