Delhi: Students manhandled, detained for protesting UGC-NET cancellation
Several members of the student organisations on 20 June manhandled by police and detained while protesting outside Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's residence and the Ministry of Education in New Delhi against the cancellation of the UGC-NET examination and irregularities in the NEET.
A large number of students, including members of student outfits such as Congress-affiliated NSUI, Students' Federation of India (SFI), All India Students Association (AISA), Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students' Association (BAPSA), Democratic Students' Front (DSF) and Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) participated in the protest.
The Union education ministry late on Wednesday night ordered the cancellation of UGC-NET following inputs of the exam's integrity being compromised.
The students were demanding a ban on the National Testing Agency (NTA), the body which conducts the examination, a probe into the alleged paper leak and immediate resignation of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
"Female students were heckled and manhandled brutally," alleged the SFI.
Over 50 students who were detained, were released late evening, a police officer said to the PTI news agency.
During the protest, NSUI's national president Varun Choudhary climbed atop a car and threw a bag of fake currency in the air - sending 'cash' flying, to highlight the alleged corruption in the UGC-NET and NEET-UG exams. He and the other protesters were soon dragged away by the police and pushed into buses.
Interestingly, RSS-affiliated right wing student group, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) also staged protest on Delhi University's north campus and the Jawaharlal Nehru University.
