India clinches T20 world cup after 17-year wait

India has won the T20 World Cup for the first time in 17 years, defeating South Africa by 7 runs at Kensington Oval, Barbados.
This victory ends an 11-year trophy drought for India, which last lifted an ICC trophy in the 2013 Champions Trophy.
The triumph adds to India's illustrious cricketing history, following their 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup wins.
India set a target of 177 runs, finishing their innings at 176 for 7. Virat Kohli, in a remarkable comeback, played a stellar knock of 76 off 59 balls, despite struggling for form throughout the tournament.
Axar Patel provided crucial support with a quickfire 47 off 31 balls. Early setbacks saw India at 34 for 3, but a pivotal 72-run partnership between Kohli and Patel stabilized the innings.
Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje were the pick of the bowlers for South Africa, taking two wickets each for 23 and 26 runs, respectively.
South Africa's chase began shakily, but partnerships between Quinton de Kock, Tristan Stubbs, Heinrich Klaasen, and David Miller kept their hopes alive.
However, Hardik Pandya's crucial dismissal of Klaasen in the 17th over shifted the momentum back in India's favor. The Indian seamers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Arshdeep Singh, bowled with precision, effectively curbing the run rate in the final overs.
Virat Kohli, who was named Player of the Match, announced that this would be his last T20 international match, marking the end of an era for Indian cricket. His leadership and performance were instrumental in securing this historic win.
South Africa, appearing in their first ICC World Cup final, showed commendable resilience but fell short, finishing their innings at 169 for 8 in 20 overs. Both teams entered the final undefeated, making the contest a highly anticipated and closely fought encounter.
Jasprit Bumrah, who bowled consistently throughout the World Cup campaign, won the Player of the Season award. He also set a new record for the lowest economy rate in a T20 World Cup, with an impressive 4.12.
