Nepal floods: Death toll crosses 100 as rescue operations continue
The latest report puts the figure for deaths at 112 across Nepal after flooding and landslides in the Himalayan nation while 65 people are still missing, Nepali Times reported on Sunday. Forty-nine were killed in Kathmandu Valley, the capital region.
Three days of record-breaking rainfall caused rivers to burst their banks and triggered landslides. Rescue workers recovered 14 bodies overnight from two buses headed to Kathmandu that were buried in a landslide on a highway near the capital city.
More than 3,000 security personnel were deployed to assist rescue efforts with helicopters and motorboats on Saturday as parts of the country, including the capital, Kathmandu, have been inundated, news agencies reported.
Police were working to clear debris and reopen roads to traffic after landslides blocked highways at 28 locations, police spokesman Dan Bahadur Karki said.
Bagmati Province where Kathmandu is located recorded 53 deaths, while Lalitpur saw the highest casualty at 20, followed by 14 in Kavre and 11 in Kathmandu, Nepali Times stated.
Bhaktapur and Panchthar have recorded five deaths each while Dhankuta, Sindhupalchok and Dolakha registered two.
