Two Indian students killed in tragic car crash in Ireland

The Indian community in Ireland is mourning the loss of two young Indian nationals, Bhargav Chitturi and Suresh Cherukuri, who tragically lost their lives in a car accident in County Carlow.

The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of January 31, when their vehicle veered off the road and collided with a tree on the N80 in Leagh, Rathoe. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene, according to The Irish Times. Two other passengers, a man and a woman in their 20s, sustained serious injuries but are reported to be in stable condition. They are currently receiving treatment at St. Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny.

The Indian Embassy in Dublin expressed its condolences and assured support for the bereaved families and the injured. In a statement shared on X, the Embassy said, “The Embassy of India in Dublin conveys its deepest condolences on the sad demise of Mr. Cherekuri Suresh Chowdary and Mr. Chithoori Bhargav in a car accident in Co. Carlow.”

A fundraiser has been initiated to assist with funeral expenses and provide financial support to the families. Within just 24 hours, over €25,000 was raised through 400 donations. Venkat Vuppala, the fundraiser’s organiser, shared online, “We are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Bhargav Chitturi and Suresh Cherukuri. It is with great sorrow that we announce the tragic car accident that claimed their lives.”

The accident occurred on the first anniversary of another fatal crash on the same stretch of road, which claimed the lives of three young friends in 2024.

Local authorities, including the Gardaí, have launched an investigation into the incident and are appealing for witnesses or anyone with footage of the crash to come forward. Superintendent Anthony Farrell from Carlow Garda station stated that the vehicle, a black Audi A6, was traveling towards Carlow town when it left the road and crashed into a tree at Graiguenaspiddoge.

Reports indicate that the four individuals involved in the accident had gathered earlier that evening at Nine Stones car park on Mount Leinster before the tragic incident took place.

Expressing his concern over road safety, Taoiseach Micheál Martin remarked, “We have to double down and work extremely hard on safety and on roads.”

The loss has deeply affected the Indian community in Ireland, with many rallying together to offer support and solidarity to the grieving families.
