Six arrested in Tripura lynching case

Six people have been arrested in connection with the lynching of a 35-year-old man at a construction site within Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in South Tripura’s Belonia.
The arrests were made following a complaint lodged by the victim’s family. The incident occurred early Monday.
South Tripura SP Ashok Sinha confirmed the arrests, stating, “Three of the arrested persons are Navodaya employees, and others are construction labourers from outside the state. All were booked for murder in a group under sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and have been forwarded to court seeking their remand.”
The deceased, identified as Babul Mia, was a resident of Muzaffar Colony, adjacent to the Navodaya Vidyalaya. The assailants claimed that he had climbed the school’s boundary wall intending to steal construction materials when he was allegedly caught. The accused reportedly beat him severely and tied him to a tree overnight.
On Sunday morning, local villagers alerted the police, who rushed to the scene and found Babul Mia unconscious. He was immediately taken to Belonia Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. News of his death spread rapidly, prompting family members, relatives, and neighbors to gather at the police station, demanding justice and swift action against those responsible.
“Prima facie, the incident proves that Babul was lynched to death on the school campus, but police didn’t register the case under the appropriate section of lynching; instead, they attempted to save the criminals who killed Babul on false charges,” alleged the younger brother of the deceased, adding that the accused persons tied him and tortured him for the whole night to ensure his death.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohammad Mustafa (20), Abul Hossain (40), Utpal Dey (24), Akash Das (23), Sanjay Tiwari (45), and Shiv Shankar Sarkar (23). Among them, three are from neighboring Assam, while the other three are residents of Belonia subdivision.
